The Spiritual Works of Mercy
"Love takes up, where knowledge leaves off"-Thomas Aquinas
Catholic social teaching is concerned with building a just society and pursuing a life of holiness amidst the challenges of modern society (USCCB on Catholic Social Teaching).
Students meet weekly to prayerfully study and reflect on God's Word. Having opened their hearts to the influence of the Holy Spirit, group members leave empowered to make a positive impact on their community and the world.
The Corporal Works of Mercy
"I want a church that is poor, and for the poor" -Pope Francis
The works of mercy are charitable actions by which we come to the aid of our neighbor in his spiritual and bodily necessities(Catechism of Catholic Church, 2447). Students are invited to take advantage of the opportunities at the Newman Center to participate in social justice formation and activities. Several times throughout the year, we undertake community service projects such as collecting canned foods, winter clothing drives, feeding those in need and working on home/facility repairs for the needy.
