Meet your 2019-2020 Student Officers!

Picture
Isabel Javier | Executive Officer
Major: Psychology
Hometown: El Dorado Hills, California

The three pillars in Isabel’s life have been faith, family and food. Growing up in a Filipino-American family, these three pillars were always present in every milestone- family lunches after Sunday Mass feasting on sinigang or adobofilled her heart and stomach. When she came to Davis, she sought out a place for those three pillars once more. Newman was it!  Starting as publicity co-chair, Isabel has been involved with Newman since her freshman year. Her favorite thing about Newman is discovering God in the many faces and people that she gets to encounter. She is incredibly grateful for the opportunity to serve on Newman Council, and feels she is a testament to God “qualifying the called”.  In the future, she hopes to combine ministry and her psychology degree as a Catholic Marriage and Family Therapist.

Katrina Tuazon Perez | Executive Officer
Major: Human Development | Minor: Public Health
Hometown: Soledad, CA

Katrina is someone who loves adventures and exploring anything new, whether it is food, a new hiking trail, or even a beach. The one consistency she that is always in her life is her relationship with her faith. Although she had to see the darkest day in order to have God’s brightest path for her future revealed to her, her passion to guide other lost sheep in their spiritual journey strengthened. As she transitioned into a new adventure in Davis, she stumbled upon the Newman Center, and every part of her heart knew this was a new chapter in her faith that she was ready for. Instead of teaching the youth back at home  how to stay connected to their faith with changes in their life occuring, she knew it was her turn to be taught more about Catholicism. If you ever bump into her, ask her about her dog, tell her about your favorite comic book, or encourage her to go to morning mass.

Favorite Quote: “Life is like an arrow. If it pulls you back with difficulties, that means it will launch you into something great. So, hold on and keep aiming.”

Isaac Bautista | Executive Officer
Major: Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
Hometown: Firebaugh, CA

A member of the Newman community since his first day of college, Isaac credits the community and the sacraments provided by the Newman Catholic Center for strengthening his relationship with our Lord. Throughout his time at Newman, Isaac has developed a passion for the intellectual side of the Catholic faith and he enjoys having discussions about different theological topics. Inspired by 1 Peter 3:15 ("... Always be prepared to make a defense to anyone who calls you to account for the hope that is in you, yet do it with gentleness and reverence…"), Isaac believes that it is important to be able to have discussions about what the Catholic Church teaches and why she teaches it, especially in a contemporary secularized society such as the one at UC Davis. When not at Newman, you could probably find Isaac designing and building a rocket for the E.C.L.I.P.S.E Research Program, studying on campus, or bowling at the MU. If you ever need some prayer or someone to talk to, feel free to ask him.

Alexis Magsano |
Major: Neurobiology, Physiology, and Behavior (lol thats a lot)

While Alexis was not part of Newman since the beginning of his college career, when he joined his sophomore year, it was like being back at home for him having been very active at his home church in Vallejo, CA. As he grew in his faith, he slowly started to help more and more within Newman. Presently, with his student officer role, he also leads the Asian Pacific-American Catholics ministry. Outside of Newman, say hi to Alexis while he drives for Unitrans! And don't be scared to ask him about his musical tastes, his favorite books, or his favorite superheroes. Favorite

From Southern California, Callie grew up as the youngest of four and always loves to be surrounded by friends and family. She is a third year pre-veterinary student with hopes of attending vet school after graduating.  After finding her second family through Freshmen Foundations, she hopes to help others along their own faith journeys and involvement at Newman. Her favorite part about Newman is witnessing the true love of God by the entire community, especially at retreats. In her little spare time, she likes to spend it doing something fun outside or just hanging with friends. Callie loves her role as secretary/treasurer  because her life motto is “efficiency is key!” If you ever need anything, she would love to help you out.

Cynthia Woo | Officer of Communications
Major: Managerial Economics | Minor: Technology Management
Hometown: Calexico, CA

Growing up so close to the Southern California border, Cynthia has a diverse background and unique culture that she proudly shows (yup, just ask her!). Going into her fourth and final year at UC Davis, she has a tight knit group of friends both in and out of Newman. She found the Newman Center through Gratia Plena during her Sophomore year where she connected with now close friend, Thanh Nguyen! There she learned the importance of faith, accountability, and mercy. Newman has been a huge part of her college experience ever since and has made lifelong friendships that motivate her daily. When she's not making announcements at Newman, Cynthia is running meetings for her business club, eating ice cream, quoting Spongebob with her sister Sam, and crying/enjoying every moment of her Senior Year.

Favorite Quote: "For where you treasure is, there also will be your heart." Matthew 6:21
