Liturgical Ministries are an essential element to our liturgical life here at the Newman
Center. You are encouraged to participate to help make our liturgies great! You can
join us as a Lector, Eucharistic Minister, singer or musician in the choir, or even as a
chapel decorator. New ministers are always welcome, and we provide training so you
can participate.
Retreats provide an excellent opportunity to take a break from a busy class schedule
and the worries of life in order to rejuvenate energy for your faith. We host a single–day
retreat for new students during the fall quarter, and we have full weekend retreats in
both winter and spring quarters.
The SCLA House Building Project is a one week service project in South Central Los
Angeles over the first week of winter break. Money is earned to go the SCLA through
work projects done for the greater Davis Community. Weekly SCLA meetings are held
Sundays after the 5pm mass in the Newman Center Chapel.
The Newman Social Justice Committee meets the first Sunday of every month,
between the morning Masses (if there are 2 Masses), or after Mass (if there is just one).
The purpose of the committee is to support social justice efforts at both Newman and St.
James, and to organize educational events on social justice issues. All are welcome to
join.
Soul Food is a weekly Thursday night activity composed of Confession (5:00pm,
Newman Chapel) Mass (5:30pm, Chapel), Dinner (6:30pm, Newman House), Adoration
(7:30pm, Chapel), and Bible Study or a faith discussion (8pm, Newman House). Come
to any or all of these activities!
Bible Study offers the opportunity to study and reflect on sacred Scripture in a small
group environment. Bible Study will be held on Thursday evenings at 7:30pm at the
Newman Center.
Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament is held in the Newman Chapel every Thursday
during Soul Food at 7:15pm.
Scripture Study is held on Monday nights at 7:00pm in the Newman Center and looks
at the readings for the upcoming Sunday.
Christian Life Communities (CLCs) is a small group experience for faith sharing and
exploration to grow with God in a safe space.
Freshman Faith Study is a small group especially for freshmen that meets weekly in
winter and spring quarters to discuss their shared faith and how they see God in their
lives.
Sophomore Faith Study will begin meeting weekly for faith sharing beginning in fall
quarter.
Community Service projects at Newman include food drives, clothing drives,
and Trick-or-Treating for canned goods on Halloween.
Sports and Recreation is alive and well at Newman! We have played soccer, inner
tube water polo, and many other sports! Also, we frequently host field days at St.
James or Central Park in which we play soccer and have a BBQ.
Rosary Each month the Newman Center gathers to pray the Rosary as a group. Please
come join us in the Newman Chapel at 5:30pm on the second Friday of each month.
Los Angeles Religious Education Congress is an annual Catholic Conference in
Anaheim. Every year a group of Newmanites earns money for the trip by doing work
projects and spends a weekend at Congress learning about and growing in their faith.
Catholic Relief Services Campus Advocates plan a 24 hour fast during Lent,
coordinate Rice Bowls, and coordinate other Social Justice activities to connect the
Newman Center and Davis Campus to Catholic Relief Services.
Family Assisted Meals in Special Homes (FAMISH) is a program which connects
students and Davis residents so that they can bond and share meals together.
Choirs are open for anyone to sing in! Newman has three choirs: one which sings at
the 9am mass, one at the 11am mass, and one at 5pm. You are invited to practice with
them in the Chapel an hour before the mass starts (at 8am, 10am, or 3:30pm) and/or
during their respective practices during the week.
Catechism Study is a weekly study of the Church’s teachings intended to strengthen
our understanding of the faith we practice.
Hospitality takes place during finals week in fall, winter, and spring. There is lunch in
the Newman House from 11-4pm, rooms to socialize in, quiet places to study, and the
chapel will be open as a sacred space for prayer.
