About Us
The Davis Newman Center was established in 1965 and is sponsored by the
Catholic Diocese of Sacramento. The Newman Center is housed on the original
site of St. James Catholic Church. St. James Parish is now located at 14th and
B streets. John Henry Cardinal Newman was a proponent of liberal education, the
role of the laity, and the place of conscience in one's life. The United States
Conference of Catholic Bishops has established chaplainries called Newman
Centers, named in his honor, to care for the spiritual needs of those engaged
in university life and to serve as a Catholic presence in the university
environment.
Mission Statement
Recognizing Christ's instruction to "love one another as I have loved
you," the
UC Davis Newman Center seeks to be a community in which
Christian faith and values are nurtured through ongoing social, educational,
and faith development opportunities in Scripture, social justice, liturgy,
prayer, and spiritual and personal growth, for UC Davis students, faculty,
staff, and the broader Davis community.
Sunday Mass is held at 9am, 11am and 5pm during the academic year
(10am during the summer). Also during the academic year Mass is held
on Tuesdays on campus at noon, generally in the Memorial Union and
on Thursdays, at 6:00pm at the Newman Center.
